That's what Eleonore Büning wrote in VAN magazine about the premiere weekend of the Attems saga at Styriarte Graz.
Schvarzstein is a theatre animal: actor, comedian and opera director as well as an expert in improvisation. He has often organised experiments of this kind for the Styriarte. This time, together with dramaturge Thomas Höft, they have created a double opera pasticcio called Attems-Saga: formally an authentic baroque parody, content-wise a soap, half fake, half fiction. Höft has a knack for parody, and his story about the Attems saga wants to be taken seriously, albeit as a buffa.
Non-Grazians should read up on it first: Ah, the Attems family! Based in Graz, it was once one of the most influential aristocratic families in Austria, and Antonio Vivaldi only visited Graz once, shortly before the end of his life, when travelling through to Vienna. However, he left behind 49 full-length operas, which, unlike the Four Seasons, are performed far too rarely today and are largely unknown. Thomas Höft, who wrote the book for the double pasticcio, drew on this treasure trove.
Höft invented a slapstick comedy around Empress Maria Theresia's historically documented travel plan to spend the night in Graz in 1750: Ignaz Maria Count Attems wants to perform an opera in honour of the empress. His drunken court poet (Thomas Höft) and his offended court composer (Michael Hell), as well as his cynical and quarrelsome sister, Marianne Countess Attems, create obstacles. They fall back on Vivaldi's Seasons concertos, filled out with arias from various Vivaldi operas. The piece is finished, it is even performed. Wonderfully melodious, glitteringly ornate Vivaldi opera arias from Farnace, Giustino, Tito Manlio and Griselda are heard. All the performers, some well-known Viennese actors, some young singers, but also artists and dancers, not only have a lot to do, but are obviously also having great fun. The silliest of all running gags is: The Empress is not coming!

Seine Story zur Attems-Saga will ernst genommen werden, freilich als Buffa. Nicht-Grazer sollten sich dazu erstmal schlau machen: Ah, das Geschlecht der Attems! Es war, hauptansässig in Graz, dereinst eine der einflussreichsten Adelsfamilien Österreichs.
Antonio Vivaldi war nur einmal in Graz, kurz vor Ende seines Lebens, auf der Durchreise nach Wien. Aber er hat immerhin 49 abendfüllende Opern hinterlassen, die, im Unterschied zu den allfälligen Vier Jahreszeiten, heute viel zu selten aufgeführt werden und weithin unbekannt sind. Aus diesem Fundus hat sich Thomas Höft, der das Buch zum Doppel-Pasticcio schrieb, bedient. Er erfand, rund um den historisch verbürgten Reiseplan der Kaiserin Maria Theresia, anno 1750 in Graz zu nächtigen, eine slapstick-gespickte Komödie: Ignaz Maria Graf Attems will zu Ehren der Kaiserin eine Oper aufführen. Sein trunkener Hofdichter (Thomas Höft) und sein beleidigter Hofkomponist (Michael Hell), aber auch seine zynisch-zänkische Schwester, Marianne Gräfin Attems, sorgen für Hindernisse. Man greift zurück auf Vivaldis Jahreszeiten-Konzerte, aufgefüllt mit Arien aus diversen Vivaldi-Opern. Das Stück wird fertig, es wird sogar aufgeführt. Herrlich melodienselige, glitzernd verzierte Vivaldiopernarien aus Farnace, Giustino, Tito Manlio und Griselda erklingen. Alle Mitwirkenden, teils namhafte Wiener Schauspieler, teils junger Sängernachwuchs, aber auch Artisten und Tänzer, haben nicht nur viel zu tun, sondern offenbar auch großen Spaß. Der albernste aller Running-Gags ist: Die Kaiserin kommt nicht!
